Why doesn’t a GPS require monthly fees?

I don’t understand how GPS doesn’t require a monthly fee. Like in a car or on a cell phone, you use the services of a satellite to track you and you don’t have to pay a fee?
Thanks

  1. Dennis M Said,

You can thank the US government for that.

The gps system was created for military use and at one time was encoded so only military receivers could use the signal. At one point, I believe in the 83 the technology was released to the public, although the signal was downgraded. Accuracy was to about 10 feet or so, this was done with a feature called selective availability. Today, we have the same accuracy in our gps phones that missiles have.

Theres your history lesson for the day,

The reason it is free is because Regan decided to make it free for the greater good. But the truth is you do pay for it if you live in the US and you pay your taxes. It is a very expensive system to maintain. Every day the satellites have to be adjusted, and there are times when they go out. At the moment there are two satellites out over the US.
